Holidays in Namibia

Namibia is a photographer's dream! Vast open landscapes,golden-red dunes, prolific wildlife, rugged mountains, sun-bright skies and star-filled nights. It's immensity of space - it is the fifth largest country in Africa - is accentuated by the fact that it is the driest country south of the Sahara. But life there is, and in many diverse forms, from the Himba, one of the last true nomadic tribes on Earth, to the unique desert-adapted elephant and the bizarre Welwitchia plant.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Etosha National Park: Encompassing an area the size of New Jersey, Etosha's blinding white saltbeds teem with wildlife.
  • Sossusvlei: Travel to Sossusvlei to view the most iconic desert scenery of Namib Naukluft National Park. Trek the high dunes and witness the wind carve the ever changing landscape.
  • Damaraland: The highlight of the scenic, huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful region of Damaraland is populations of desert-adapted elephant, black rhino, giraffe, ostrich and springbok. You will also find rock-art dating back 6,000 years!
  • Swakopmund: A premier seaside destination with a small German town feel, Swakopmund has reinvented itself as the adventure-sports capital of Namibia.
  • The Skeleton Coast: One of the most hauntingly beautiful places on the planet, Skeleton Coast is a wild, desolate environment with stark, incredibly beautiful shoreline dotted with bleached whalebones and other skeletal remains, as well as a host of shipwrecks and yet it supports a host of incredible adapted wildlife.
  • Fish River Canyon: Second only to the Grand Canyon in size, Fish River Canyon is spectacular and deserted and Africa's most awe-inspiring site.
  • Himba Culture: One of Africa's most interesting ethnic groups, Himba are a tribe of nomadic pastoralists and largely unaffected by the modern world.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

May to October are the dry months, hence the best time to visit Namibia. November is the shoulder month. However, many birders come to Namibia, and the best time to visit is during the summer and wet months from December to March, with temperature rising over 100 F during the day and below freezing during night.
